- Without an in-person meeting, you need to take extra steps to really get to know these candidates. What you want to do rather than jumping right into business or jumping into the interviewing process, learn something personal about them. Small talk a little bit just to put this person at ease. Start out them with intros of every person involved in the interviewing process, and let them explain their name, their title, and how they're going to interact with this person once they're hired. Look at the LinkedIn profile before the interview, and if anybody on the interviewing team has a common hobby or a common interest, it would be great for them to say, you know, my name is Barb Bruno, and I'm going to be one of your bosses, and I see that you're an avid golfer, so am I. You want to be very friendly, you want to be informal, and anything that you can do to put this candidate at ease, when you let someone talk about…
