Be present and set the stage
- Whenever I know I'm going to be having an important conversation, like giving a team some bad news, working with a student that's facing some challenges, there's a couple things that I always do first and foremost to prepare myself and the space for listening. These aspects of preparation are things that I encourage you to do to make sure that you are ready to listen. The first thing you should do is make sure you're able to be present and focused on listening. This means that you should be well-rested. Make sure you're not too full or too hungry and that you're able to put aside any of your own mental distractions, whether you've had a fight with your significant other, you've got bills to pay, all of those worries. If you bring those to the listening encounter, you're not going to be able to listen and focus as well as you should.
