- Many people think that once they become the manager, they are managing the team and they're not a part of the team. I suggest a different mindset. You manage the team, and are a member of it too. Which means that you must be able to switch hats intentionally and wisely if you want the best possible results. The manager hat is already what you're thinking about, whether you're comfortable with it yet or not. Here's a short list of roles you play with that manager hat on. Guide and direct. Part of your role as a manager is to guide conversations and activities and make sure people are doing the right kinds of things correctly. But, you already knew that. Answer questions. You often have information or perspective that other team members don't have. As the manager, be willing to answer questions and provide perspective whenever possible.
