- Quitting a job is not the time for you to gloat. On the contrary, it represents an opportunity for you to be kind. So first of all do not bad mouth your company or any of its employees. Every industry is like a small town. It's amazing how everyone seems to know everyone else. If you remain, you'll develop a reputation for being ungrateful, or worse. Instead, no matter how traumatic your departure from the company was, be positive. At a networking event a few years ago I met a woman named Anne Marie. She was an experienced and very personable career counselor and was looking for a job. She was also the single mother of a young son.
