- A number of years ago, I stopped for coffee at my regular spot and it happened to be a day I was dressed casually since I wasn't seeing customers. In the line, there was a man in front of me who was rather rude with the cashier and when I told them politely to take it easy, he wasn't happy with me, either. Later that morning, I got a call from a colleague saying he hoped I could alter my schedule and meet with a job applicant he was interviewing. Shortly after, I was in my office, introduced to a very confident and smiling prospective recruit whose demeanor changed quickly when he realized I was the guy from the cashier's line and I asked, "How was your coffee?" That's a true story and an extreme example, but the reality is the first impression we make when meeting someone new can many times be a lasting one.
