- It's true that in many ways getting ahead is about who you know. People who are better connected are often privy to vital information before others and they are often afforded more opportunities. So, let's think about networking effectively. Start by seeking a variety of networking opportunities. Inside your organization, you'll find several from special project teams to brown bag lunches to social events. Outside of work, there are many as well like formal networking events for certain industries, vocations or certain types of professionals. The goal over time is to choose a variety of opportunities and enjoy at least one every month. Now, how do we prepare effectively before networking? I want you to follow these four steps. First, do your homework. If you're going to a rotary club meeting, search their website and know what they've been up to.
