- If you're committed to building a more creative organization, it's important to understand what it means to be creative. We've all experienced a sense of creativity, probably on a daily basis. It happens when we feel safe, free to be ourselves, and open to new possibilities. This is the creative mindset. Let's look at four key characteristics that make up this mindset. First, and perhaps foremost, is a keen sense of curiosity. By curiosity, I mean a genuine desire to explore and understand, like wonder, like there's something to discover. Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck suggests that we can have two different attitudes toward intelligence and learning. She calls them the fixed versus the growth mindsets. In the more reactive fixed mindset, we strive to be right. When we assert, "I know that," we assume there is no more to learn.
