- Each organization is its own matrix. Don't worry, you're not going to be asked to make a choice between a red pill and a blue pill like Keanu Reeves in the movie The Matrix. When I refer to an organizational matrix, I mean there are relationships with other employees that go up, down, and sideways. In addition, those relationships oftentimes cross departments, which means you may be coaching up, down, and sideways throughout the company. Let's take a quick look at each. It can be intimidating to coach up, to coach people in positions above you. The farther up a leader is in the organization, the more filtered the information is that they get. Sometimes, it's really important for leaders to understand how they're perceived and what people think about their policies. Coaching up with respect and authenticity can make this happen.
