- If you come from a technology background, then you may have heard of the Bell Labs facility in New Jersey. This laboratory was responsible for much of the technology innovation that happened in the 1960s and 70s. Many of Bell Labs' unplanned technology innovations came out of spontaneous, face-to-face conversations. What Bell Labs knew was that innovation is not created by memos. Innovation is the product of real-time, face-to-face collaboration. Compare that to many modern office environments. In a modern office, you're more likely to see rows of cubicles. The software developers will be clustered in one area, the designers will be clustered in another area, the customers might even be in a different floor or building.
