Why is the world so complex?
- It recently struck me just how complex the world has become. And it happened in the most unusual of places. I was queuing up for my regular Starbucks coffee, waiting to order my simple black coffee, as it comes. You see, I'm quite a simple guy. And I'm stood there, relaxed, thinking about my cup of coffee, when the person in front of me opened their mouth and what came out was urban poetry. They wanted a Breve Half & Half, semi-caffe, light whip, pepper-mocha, quadruple pump, and they wanted it extra hot. Well, I don't even understand what that is, but what I knew in that moment was things have become so ridiculously complex, because we seem to value complexity over simplicity. I'm Richard Gerver, and through this course, we're going to look at how you can engage better with your instinct, with some of those simple ways that we can see the world differently, how we can uncloud so many of the complex things we have to deal with. So what I'd like you to do, is start by picking up a pen and writing down a problem. Well, let's get started and see if, along the way, I can teach you ways to come back to that problem and see it in far more simple terms.
