Why internships are important

- When I started college, I was a finance major. I absolutely knew I wanted to live the fast-paced life of a wall street financier and make the big bucks. When I landed an internship, my sophomore year at a prestigious bank, I felt like I had won the lottery. My career was taking shape. I was on my way to landing my dream job, post-graduation. How did it go? It was miserable. I was bored to tears with the pages of Excel spreadsheets. I couldn't have cared less about the ups and downs of the stock market and I didn't mesh well with the people I worked with. With all of that being said, this internship at a Global Bank was one of the best things I could've done for myself. That's because I learned what I did not want in a job, and quickly changed my major. Without this awful internship experience, I would have wasted years studying finance and then being trapped in a job I didn't like. This is the beauty of internships. There are several benefits from having internship experience, ideally at several different organizations. First, you learn what you do and do not want in your career in a low-risk environment. As an intern, you are only committing to a couple months of working there. Second, you gain real world experience to put on your resume that will help you land the most competitive full-time jobs and you'll have great examples of your accomplishments to talk about in interviews. Third, you meet people who can be mentors throughout your career. These relationships will have longterm positive impacts. These are some pretty powerful reasons to devote your time and energy to gaining real world work experience. It's never too early to find an internship. Well, I guess it is too early if you don't meet the age requirements for a work permit, but, if you are soon to graduate high school or you're in college, you are in the perfect time of life to leverage the benefits of getting an internship. Now put yourself out there, learn from the horrible internships, celebrate the thrills of a great internship and get on the fast track to a successful and meaningful career.
