Why does project management matter?

- One of the challenges we face as project managers is explaining what our job is. You'll find people who explain it in different ways, but I think the simplest explanation is that project managers add value by reducing the risks to the scope, schedule, and budget. In other words, we help to make sure our teams keep their promises to the business. Project management is about making sure the work gets done and delivers value as quickly and cheaply as possible. That includes anticipating and responding to surprises. So you need to have a plan and you need to have a process for tracking progress and dealing with issues as they emerge. No successful sports team goes onto the field without having a coach that can give them tips and help them work together. As project managers we're the coaches who make sure the team can actually accomplish what they set out to do as quickly and efficiently as possible. So the more important a project is, the more you need a project manager who can help to make sure that the team is successful.
