Why do companies conduct video interviews?

- What the heck? Why are companies doing video interviews today? Let's just add an additional layer of stress to the whole situation. Deep breaths, you've got this. Companies are using video interviews for a lot of reasons today. Here are a few of them. Number one, they save time and expense through the interviewing process. For instance, if you're not a local candidate, it's going to be a lot faster and more cost efficient to meet you through a two-way video interview instead of flying you in to meet in person. It also may be easier for you. You won't have to sneak out of your current job for two or three days just to make this happen. The second reason they use them is because two-way interviews give everyone an opportunity to have that more face-to-face experience, which is something you just won't get if you stick to the phone. Remember, companies aren't just trying to see if your skills line up, they also want to know if you're going to fit in on their team, and that's really hard to gauge through just a phone call. One-way interviews have become much more common in recent years, in part because they provide hiring teams a much more structured and consistent method for assessing candidates. And they could actually be good for you. You won't have to worry about that, "I'm having a bad day," interviewer or, "I really don't know what to ask this person." Every candidate will receive the same questions delivered in the same way and have the same opportunity to shine. This also makes it easier and more consistent when it comes time for the hiring team to get together and evaluate all the candidates. And for some people, both one-way and two-way video interviews could make you feel a little less stressed than you might feel in a face-to-face environment. But yes, I get it. Video interviews, especially the one-way kind can feel super awkward and impersonal. You can choose to decline participating in one which obviously isn't going to move you forward, or, you can get past the weirdness and nail that son of a gun.
