Why do PMOs exist?

- Historically, PMOs were administrative functions. They consolidated reporting, oversaw the use of the project methodology and processes, and managed project intake. That then evolved to the more recent focus on governance and oversight, making sure all projects are managed appropriately. But in the last few years, there's been increasing recognition that project managers should be accountable for those elements. PMOs have now become more focused on business performance. To explain, let's think about a business area for a minute, marketing. That department will conduct different campaigns, some targeted at specific regions, some focused on certain products and services, and some just looking to promote the company's brand. All of those individual campaigns are part of an overall strategy designed to make the company more successful. Marketing leadership is measured on whether that success happened.
