Why compassion is important in organizations
- Let's talk about why compassion is important in the workplace. I define compassion as having the capacity to have an awareness of others, the mindset of wishing the best for others and three, the courage to take action. We know that compassion is something that we're supposed to strive for, something that feels good, but beyond just feeling good, we know that compassion is a success strategy. It's a success strategy for individuals. In his book, "Give and Take", Adam Grant talks about the world of workers. He divides them into a spectrum. On one end of the spectrum he has selfless givers, and on the other end of the spectrum, he has takers. Right, so if I'm a taker negotiating for a pie I'm just going to take the whole pie. Now he discovers that takers do better than selfless givers in the world of work. And that's a bummer if you're into humanity, but he goes on to discover a different class of worker. He calls…
