Why being assertive matters

- Have you ever had to speak up and say no to someone at work? Have you ever disagreed with colleagues in a meeting or had to deliver some critical feedback? How do you feel about having tough conversations like these? For must of us, they can be pretty unnerving, but are also completely essential to being a leader. Being assertive is a choice and it's a bold choice that leaders make every day. Of course it's easier to sit back and say nothing, but when leaders see something going down they say something. Now does this make us the most well-liked people all the time, no. Unfortunately, being assertive does come with some social costs, especially for women leaders. But being willing to speak up and assert yourself is essential for better decision-making, increased creativity, and less groupthink at work. Being assertive also comes with some big personal benefits, too, like feeling better able to draw the boundaries you need to live your best life. I'm Emily Aries, a speaker, author and career consultant. And in this LinkedIn Learning course, you'll learn how to be a more courageous, assertive, and tactful leader who feels fully equipped to speak up and make your voice heard.
