- In the 1939 World's Fair, one of the most popular attractions was a 250-pound robot named Elektro. He dazzled audiences while smoking, blowing up balloons, and even telling jokes. Many people believed they were just a few years away from having their own Elektro so it would vacuum their floors or drive them to work. But as impressive as Elektro was, he had a serious flaw. He was automated, but not intelligent. So when you pressed a button, he could blow up a balloon, but he didn't have the ability to learn and grow. If you fast forward to today, you still see this confusion around artificial intelligence and automation. And some of this is intentional. Many software and hardware vendors eagerly and often incorrectly label their products as artificial intelligence.
