What to watch out for
- Okay, now that you know the basics of story-telling, here's some pitfalls to avoid. First of all, never kick off your story by saying, sorry, can I just tell a quick story here? I promise, it'll just take a minute. That just tells the audience that you don't really think the story is very important. Never apologize or ask permission to tell a training story. Just tell it. In fact, don't even tell the audience you're going to tell them a story. Some people have a negative reaction to being told that you're going to tell them a story. Now, it might work with kindergartners, but it seldom works with adults. Just tell the story. No apology, no permission and no announcing it's a story. Okay, second, training stories don't need to be long. Your informal stories can be as short as 30 seconds or as long as five minutes. But most of them should be in the two to four-minute range.
