What is self-empathy?

- Imagine that someone you really love, maybe your kid or your partner or your best friend, walked into the room that you're in right now, and they were clearly upset and in tears. Would you pretend that you didn't see them, or would you turn to them and say, "What are you crying about? You're so sensitive. I don't even care what it is, just get yourself together." I'm guessing you wouldn't. I'm guessing you'd say something like, "What's wrong?" and then offer them some words of understanding and a hug. That is to say you'd empathize, right? You'd put yourself in their shoes and try to understand why they feel the way they do. From my years of working with clients around managing emotions, I can tell you that is not how most of us meet our own emotions.
