What is scope creep?

- Projects sometimes take on a life of their own. And there can be good reasons for it. For example, your customers might request a new feature, or you might find opportunities to make small changes that could have a big impact. But when these changes affect the goals for the project, that's called Scope Creep. Scope Creep can be dangerous because you can't add more work without also providing extra resources and time to get the work done. And if you keep adding scope to a project, either you'll run out of resources before you can complete the work, or the project completion date will keep getting pushed into the future. So how do you prevent Scope Creep? One of the very best ways is by clearly defining your goals in the project charter before you start working. Then, when changes are requested, you should have an approval process that takes into account the impact on the scope, the schedule and the budget. When scope changes are approved, make sure you update the project charter as well as the project plan and the budget. And then, communicate the changes so that everyone on the team knows about them.
