From the course: Project Management Simplified

What is a project?

- Step one of project management is to be really clear about what the project involves. But before we dive into that I just want to say a little bit about what a project is. There are two things that tell you that something's a project, and the first is that it has a finish date. Projects are great because they finish. Processes, like most of the activities in a factory or a hospital or a call center, go on and on forever while projects have a finish. The second thing that makes something a project is that it always involves doing something new, something you haven't done before. So if you move house for the first time ever, or very rarely and you've forgotten how you did it last time, than it's a project. It's difficult and complicated and you need to plan it. If you're in the army or something and you move house once every six months than for you it's a process, because you know what to do, you get the same boxes down from your attic and book the same removals van, et cetera. The only difference is whether you've done it before. And personally, although it's harder to do new things, I would get bored if I wasn't doing something new every now and then. So I think projects are the best part of any job.
