What is a project charter?

- The very first thing you should do for any project is to create a charter. It's basically the instructions from the project sponsor about what the team is supposed to do. And everything you do in a project from creating the project plan to managing risks relates back to your charter. You can find lots of templates on the internet. Or you can make your own. It doesn't need to be complicated. In fact, it's better if your charter is short and simple. You just need it to paint a clear picture of what the project is expected to do. What are the goals and why are they important? Who's going to work on the project? How long should it take? How much should it cost? One of the most important things the charter does is help everyone agree on what's in scope and what's out of scope. If there are issues, conflicts, or confusion, you can go back and update the charter to reflect those changes. But make sure that you have a scope change management process in place when you make the changes. That way everyone knows and can re-plan accordingly.
