- One of the first introductions I had to managerial accounting was back in the mid-thousands. I was working for a small consulting firm. My task was to prepare a business case proposing to build new office premises for a government department's 3,000 staff. In typical fashion, my boss emailed me a bunch of background files and then gave me a call and said, "Joshie, cost it." I madly flicked through my Accounting 101 textbook and no answers whatsoever. Even my econometrics and economics textbooks had yielded no fruit. Had my university education been a complete waste of time? I really was at a loss to even know where to start, but what I didn't know at the time was that what I had not so delicately been tasked with was something called project costing.
