- You know you should be working with a contract, but it's not quite as simple as (snaps) snapping your fingers, and suddenly poof, you have a contract. So what should be in your freelance contract? Well let me first say that every contract is different. And even if you want to start with some common terms, it's best to work with a small business lawyer to help you create your first contract. Now, I'm not a lawyer, and this isn't legal advice. But there are seven specific sections of a contract that every freelancer should be aware of. First, you want to include a clear introduction to your contract. This lays out who's entering into the contract, and gives you the opportunity to specify yourself as a business entity, instead of you as an individual. Your contract should also include a Scope of Work, or SOW. The Scope of Work lays out what you'll be doing, and prevents the client from tacking on additional responsibilities down the road.
