What is emotional labor?

- You may have heard the term emotional labor thrown around in recent years, but few of us have a good understanding of what it entails, or its gendered impact at work. The term was actually coined back in 1983 by sociologist Arlie Hochschild, as a way to describe the need for workers to regulate their emotions to satisfy other customers or coworkers. A great example of this came up on a recent episode of WorkLife, Adam Grant's podcast, as he interviewed Alicia Grande, an industrial organizational psychologist who shows how people manage their emotions Grande shares a story rooted in her experience as a barista. She said, "despite being someone who enjoys people "and being sociable, I would find myself "completely exhausted after a part-time shift, "and I didn't really understand why. "My face would work, it would literally hurt, "from all the interacting, all the smiling, "and all the emotional labor I was doing, "but I didn't know that's what it was called."
