What does a project manager do?

- Project manager is a cool title, but we can actually play a lot of different roles. And the best way to explain that is to think about a spectrum of authority. On the left hand side, project managers don't have much authority to make decisions. You'll see this called a weak project manager. It doesn't mean that the person is weak, it just means that their job is really to be a communications hub. On the right hand side of the spectrum are strong project managers. They get to make important decisions. For example, they're responsible for hiring and firing team members, and they authorize major purchases. Of course, most project management roles require us to work somewhere in between those two extremes. But no matter where we fall on the spectrum, the project manager is accountable for making sure there's a good plan, and that risks and issues are being managed effectively.
