What does a chief of staff do?

- The most common question I get is what does a chief of staff do? And it's really hard to answer that, because they're all so different. If I had to boil it down to one line, I would say a chief of staff is someone who plays an operational and a strategic role to help the CEO, the executive team and the company be more productive and successful. And so for me at LinkedIn, this boils down to three areas. The first is operations and helping manage the rhythm of the business. The second is communications and helping develop leadership key notes and narratives. And the third is around strategic initiatives, helping drive important, cross-functional projects for the company. If you don't have experience in communications or strategic initiatives or operations, I would say don't sweat. In this role, as long as you can learn quickly and are willing to put yourself in a lot of new situations, you'll be able to adapt and gain those skills over time.
