- In his book "American Icon," Bryce Hoffman describes how Alan Mulally took over as CEO of Ford Motors in the early 2000s. During his first few meetings with his global leadership team, Mulally asked each leader to report the status of their goal as on track, in danger, or needs attention. He marveled that each leader reported their goal as being on track, even though the company's overall results were tanking. He was dumbfounded. This apparent contradiction actually reflected important aspects of Ford's organizational climate. We like to use the word climate to include a constellation of elements from structure to systems to culture and decision-making. Each organization's climate creates conditions that can either inhibit or foster creativity. There are a range of conditions that can inhibit creativity. Let's focus on three critical ones.
