- When I was in college, I worked at a video store with a guy who said things like, "I'm the assistant manager, so I'm in charge." Nobody respected him. We couldn't help but laugh. I wonder how many of you have worked with that guy? How many of you are that guy? All of us have to work in the new economy where the org chart is confusing, and the difference between a boss, employee, contractor or vendor isn't always certain. When it's not clear who's in charge, we can use self-leadership to influence people to do great work and get the job done. How do we do it? First, no matter where you fall in the corporate directory, if anywhere at all, be passionate. People are motivated and moved by individuals with spirit and purpose. They see it in you, they will find it within themselves. Give me a passionate independent contractor, who believes in a project's vision, over a cynical corporate veteran any day of the week. Use…
