- Going into grad school with over 25 years of management experience was interesting, particularly when we started talking about motivation. So much of what I was reading and hearing for class was theoretical and didn't resonate with my experience as a manager. I couldn't see how they applied to my role as a manager, but there were a few key theories that made sense and did help me become a better leader. By understanding these motivation theories you'll be able to lead your team more effectively. First up is Herzberg's Two-Factor Theory. Herzberg observed that there are factors that demotivate us, which he called hygiene factors, and those that motivate us called motivation factors. Hygiene factors must be present for your team to feel satisfied. It isn't that these things will make your team motivated, it's the fact that without them they will be de-motivated.
