- What your team is capable of is determined by their ability, but what they actually do is determined by their motivation, and as it turns out, how well they do it is also determined by motivation. Let's peak into what research suggests are the best ways to use incentives to motivate everyone on your team to share better ideas at work. Motivators are either extrinsic or intrinsic. Extrinsic motivators or incentives are externally driven, designed to earn a reward or avoid punishment. Common examples are bonuses, promotions, and demotions. Intrinsic motivators are internal like personal challenges, self-mastery, or personal rewards. Common examples are a sense of pride, purpose, or accomplishment.
