- Would you consider friendliness a skill. While kindness may be natural for some, it takes a little bit more thought and effort when communicating over distance, but that effort is worth it. Here are a few principles to keep in mind. First use people's names. There are few sounds sweeter than our own name. When writing an email, first, say hello and greet that person by name. During video conferences, occasionally, thank a person by name for something they said or did. These little things help people feel more respected. Second, use softened language. Compare these two example messages for a moment. Let's say someone is asking for something they need from a co-worker. Example A says, "Where's the document "you said you'd get to me? "I really needed." Example B says, "Hey Dave, I had a reminder pop up "to check in on document XYZ. "How's it coming along?" This adjustment accomplishes the same thing while…
