- People like others whom they perceive as human, not just professional. They love to sense competence in you, but they also enjoy knowing that you're imperfect, because well, they are, too. And knowing that you have to deal with challenges and setbacks makes you more relatable. Unfortunately, too often people don't feel that it's okay to openly discuss the basic fact that we're all imperfect. So they hide mistakes and avoid talking about failures. Let me challenge you to do the opposite. Healthy, productive, happy, successful people proactively deal with reality, and that includes admitting mistakes and learning from failure. The benefits are huge. You'll be viewed as more authentic, more trustworthy, and thus you'll be more approachable. That's when you begin to elicit more candor and honesty from others.
