Understanding motivational blindness

- It's a really good question when you look at why leaders let ethical issues come about. There's a number of different reasons for that, certainly. But one that the "Harvard Business Review" actually talks about is called blindness, when you see things, but some of it you take and some of it you discard. So you see something like a potential ethics violation, you see this, this, and this, and you go, "Oh, maybe that's a problem, or maybe it isn't," and then you decide to walk away from it because you're not sure. That's blindness. There are things that are going to be inconvenient or uncomfortable and you really don't want it to be true. So you assume it's not and just sort of set it aside. The reality of the situation is if there is something that is a potential ethics issue, you need to address it. Blindness can take a number of different factors.
