- I had this client, Nathan, who was an exceptional individual contributor, so successful that they promoted him to leading the team he'd been a part of. While he was working on being a better leader, he was fairly confident because he knew the work and he knew the people. Senior management was more than fairly confident, though, because they promoted him again. Now he's leading a team of people from around the world, from three countries, and he's laying awake at night wondering if he can ever figure this out. Here's what I told Nathan. You need to examine your self-talk and your beliefs because they define how you will lead. They will make all the difference in your ability to lead because our beliefs lead to our thoughts, which lead to our actions. If we don't have the right thoughts, we'll never deliver on the behaviors that we want. This is incredibly important. So let's work on your belief in yourself for a minute.…
