Understanding culture
- What's the popular sport where you live? Is it football or soccer, or is that actually the same thing? This is an example of cultural differences. To begin to help your company get the best outcomes from a globally diverse workforce, HR pros must understand the complexities of culture. And the SHRM-CP exam tests your knowledge of culture theories and how to apply them to facilitate effective communication across cultures. Culture encompasses the beliefs, attitudes, values and behaviors shared by a group. A group can be a geographic region, a professional association or even and industry. In fact, most of us are part of many cultures. For example, I grew up on a Caribbean island and that's different from where my parents grew up. So I lived in a culturally diverse household, watching both cricket and baseball, eating coconut tarts and apple pie. This is sometimes referred to as a cultural matrix.
