Understanding common challenges of delivering feedback

- The basics of feedback aren't that complex. They include being specific, helpful, knowing when and where to have a conversation, understanding how to control the conversation, including difficult reactions, and so on. However, there are a few special challenges I want you to consider. The first deals with the leadership team. Is leadership asking for a better feedback culture and embracing it themselves? Are they modeling the way? If your team hears the message but does not believe leadership is genuinely embracing the behavior, don't expect the team to embrace feedback. In that situation, here's what I want you to do. Realize that you have control over your team, but not over the larger system. Bring the team together and tell them you're aware of the disconnect that sometimes happens between what leaders say and do.
