- As a college freshman I was determined to have a summer internship. Being a camp counselor or lifeguard would be far more fun, but I had to make the most of my college years to launch my career. I got a part-time internship at a community center. Glamorous. No. Interesting work? For the most part. Paid. Yes, but not enough. So I worked 30 hours per week at my non-profit internship and 20 hours per week as a hostess at the local pizza restaurant. I got valuable work experience and the income I needed to support myself. It was a big time commitment. And it set me apart from my peers who spent their summer relaxing poolside. You too can creatively structure your internship experience to make it work for you.
