- Imagine one question that reveals a person's potential, creativity, strategic thinking and problem solving skills, and the person's ability to put a plan together to solve whatever problems you have. Wow, that'd be a great question. Well after years of looking, I finally found it, and it's why it's my favorite interview question of all time. Before I give you the question though, I want you to think about your current job or one you're trying to fill. For this job, what are the two or three big problems a new person is likely to face taking this role? For an engineering position, it's probably related to figuring out how to solve some tough technical challenge, regardless of the problem. As long as it's realistic and job related, just ask the candidate how he or she would solve it. But, and this is a big, big, big but, you're not interested in the answer. You're going to assess the person on how they would get the answer, not the answer…
