Types of empathy
- When I teach you to persuade people, I'm handing you a weapon. Persuasive skill can do a lot of good in the world, but it can also be used for evil. I'm trusting you to take the right path. This is the wisdom one of my first speech coaches shared with me. It's empowering, isn't it? He taught me that the ability to persuade people is a powerful thing, and it has to be used responsibly. Well, I feel the same way about teaching empathy. If you use it incorrectly or with the wrong motivation, you can potentially do a lot of damage. Let me explain this further by telling you about three types of empathy. To be empathetic in the most powerful and ethical way, we have to use all three stages together. First is cognitive empathy. This is when you logically infer what another person is thinking based on what you know about them.
