- So what makes an article an article anyway? There are a few simple parameters that define the format and distinguish it from other types of writing. Generally speaking, an article is a short form work of nonfiction writing, ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand words that's typically shared with readers as part of a collection of other articles. Beyond that, though, the format is fantastically flexible. And that's a creative advantage, because it gives you room to play. But it also means you have a little thinking to do before you begin writing. You need to first determine what kind of article you're going to write, and for whom. Let's go over some article formats, so you know the options available to you. When most people think of an article, they're thinking of what's known as a feature article.
