- More often than not, job offers and promotion opportunities come in via the phone or an in-person meeting. And there's a reason for that. Employers just want to get you to say yes and skip the whole negotiation process altogether. But don't let them rush you. Once an offer has been made, follow this three-step strategy in your response to buy yourself some time. First, open with gratitude. Second, ask for the offer in writing. Finally, set up a time to discuss the offer live, either over the phone or in person.
