- During the Me Too movement, I saw a lot of articles for employers about how to prevent harassment in the workplace. Unfortunately, the advice was grossly underwhelming. Most articles suggested employers provide harassment prevention training, and be sure their harassment policy was up to date. This advice drives me bonkers, because it suggests that training and policy will somehow create a workplace culture intolerant of harassment. That's ridiculous. Instead, to prevent harassment and workplace bullying, you've got to focus on three things. Leadership, policy, and behavior. If leadership communicates often about the importance of a positive work environment, and if managers and supervisors ensure a positive environment is maintained among their teams, then you can prevent bullying. And yes, you do need a policy to ensure everyone knows the rules, but the trick is to follow it and also make room for other behaviors that don't technically violate it, but that are still harmful.
