- It is known that we all perceive time somewhat differently. And so when it comes to doing business it's crucial to be aware of what to expect and how to manage perceptions that others have of time. As with many other cultural dimensions, we have a tendency to group countries together in order to compare them. Now every individual in each of these countries, however, has their own personal style and their own preference, which may not be consistent with the whole country. Something every savvy business professional should consider. Anthropologist and cross-cultural researcher, Edward T. Hall first noted the concept of time in his 1959 book, "The Silent Language." These concepts are known as monochronic and polychronic time orientation. And they continue to show up in how people behave and how cultures operate.
