- Whenever I make one of my to-do or could-do lists, I always add next to it how much time I think this project or action is going to take. This serves a number of important purposes, and it's a habit you might want to pick up. First of all, if you have something on your list that you can't assign a time to, and you can't even guess how much time it's going to take, then your project is too big. And one of the main causes of procrastination is having a project that is too big. If I put down plan Nicole's birthday party, that's too big. I don't know how much time that's going to take. Call the bakery about Nicole's cake, that I can do, 10 minutes. Write my book, it's too big. Who knows how long that's going to take. Work on chapter four, two hours.
