- Before we begin to talk about the theme stated beat, I first want you to forget about everything you think you know about the word theme, especially what you think you know from your high school English class. This is an entirely different type of theme. For the sake of the Save the Cat Beat Sheet and your novel road map, the theme of your story directly relates to what your hero has to learn over the course of the novel. In other words, why is this hero even in this book? Remember back in the opening image when I told you that your hero has to be flawed so that they have somewhere to go? Well, that flaw is the reason they're on this journey. Actually, I'm going to take that even farther and say that flaw is the entire reason you're writing this book.
