- Many administrative tasks in HR are routine, but take up a large amount of the HR pro's time. A human resource information system, or HRIS, helps free up that time to focus on strategic initiatives. An HRIS is a software application that houses HR information, allowing for easy reporting, and the execution of a variety of HR tasks, such as changing tax deductions. An HRIS may be stored and configured in-house, or managed remotely via cloud computing. Before selecting an HRIS, HR should assess their needs and the needs of the organization. Central to the decision-making process should be the impact on the employee experience. For example, will the options selected be user-friendly and let employees make quick changes to benefits, or submit a request for leave? On the backend, will the HR staff be able to run absence reports and easily calculate attrition rates?
