- More hiring mistakes are made in the first 30 minutes of an interview than at any other time. If you can avoid making any yes or no decision, even a hint of one for at least 30 minutes, the decision you ultimately make will likely be the right one. The problem is that when you like someone right away, you start asking questions designed to prove your initial intuitive or emotional assessment is the correct one, and if you don't like the person, you do the exact opposite, asking questions to prove the person is not competent. Surprisingly, you'll be able to find the proof either way. The first-impression bias is usually triggered by the person's appearance. Whether they're confident or nervous, friendly or not, and even the quality of their handshake.
