- Let's start with the obvious. When you're on the road, you're not at home. You don't have access to all your stuff. The things that you're used to having around your home or office are not there at an arm's length away. So you got to make sure you're carrying the stuff you're going to need on the road. And of course you also want to try to travel as light as possible so you're not lugging a 50 pound backpack through the airports. So let's take a look at what I think are some of the essentials you should always have with you and why there is a place in your bag. Now of course this is going to be semi-arbitrary. The needs of your work are going to dictate exactly what you bring and there are probably a couple of non-essential, more comfort level items you'll want to have with you, but these are basic things I think every business traveler should have with them to be prepared for just about any situation.
