- One thing we hear all the time is, I believe in having purpose at work, but all my boss cares about is numbers. And what I would say to that is, don't assume poor intent. Just because someone doesn't talk about purpose all the time doesn't mean they don't think work should be purposeful. A lack of purpose doesn't happen by design. It happens more often by default. People at work are under pressure to deliver the results and that can cause them to be less focused on purpose and more focused on numbers and procedures. That said, there is a way to introduce purpose with your boss that's open and invitational. Start by spelling out the financial case. If you're in sales, you can reference Lisa's book, Selling with Noble Purpose. There's also some great research on this at an organizational level from Ernst & Young that proved companies with a purpose had 89% greater employee satisfaction, 85% better customer advocacy, and 81% higher-quality products and services.
